As the modern music scene of Detroit probably began in earnest in the 1940s, it was Berry Gordy and Motown Records that really put Detroit in the spotlight (musically speaking) during the 1960s and 1970s. The symbol of a musical movement that produced figures like Marvin Gaye, the Jackson 5, Diana Ross, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and more was the Motown label. The landscape of R&B/soul music was truly shaped by this movement and Detroit recording studios were obviously part of this legacy and for the many decades in the future.
Since that time, Detroit went on to spawn a wide variety of talent, including Grand Funk Railroad, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, Kid Rock, Bebe and Cece Winans, The White Stripes, not to mention rap legend Eminem, just to name some.
Although of these big names have naturally recorded in Detroit recording studios over time, the studios themselves have done projects for a multitude of recording artists from outside the area. From rock legends Aerosmith to R&B diva Mary J. Blige, and from British alt-rock band Keane to folk-rocker John Hiatt, audio engineers in Detroit have contributed greatly to the music industry landscape. Of course, this doesn't even start to talk about a list of corporate clients which use Detroit studios (from record labels like Atlantic and Warner Brothers to brands like Coca-Cola and Pizza Hut), or the countless independent acts that record their projects here.
Even beyond that, a few of Detroit's recording studios have opted to continue their legacy by offering in-studio training to up-and-coming audio engineers and music producers.
